What you'll learn in this wine class:

Master the Wines of Italy: An in depth program designed by the Wine Scholar Guild with the support of the Italian Wine DOC/G Consortia.

The Italian Wine Scholar Study and Certification program provides up-to-date, extensive and precise information on the diverse wines and wine regions of Italy. This specialization program is designed for all intermediate and advanced students of wine, whether wine professionals or serious wine enthusiasts. It was created by native Italian, Maurizio Brioggi, (Wine Scholar Guild Education Director for Italy) with the support of the Italian wine DOC/G consortia and has now received the endorsement and patronage of the Italian Trade Commission.

Italian Wine Scholar - Northern Italy is 1 part of a 2 part credential. These two parts can be taken in any order. In this course, students will receive 18 hours of instruction, and the official full-color Italian Wine Scholar - Northern Italy study manual, in addition to 1 full year of access to the Italian Wine Scholar Online. Students will taste over 35 wines in the program.


Guided Blind Tasting Exercises

Students will taste over 35 Italian wines to bring learning objectives to life and practice blind tasting techniques. All wines are selected by Master Sommelier David Glancy and our instructors to represent a broad sampling of the classic wines of Italy.

Syllabus Overview

Italian Wine Scholar - Northern Italy consists of 6 three-hour classes covering the following Northern Italian areas.  
  • Foundation, Valle d'Aosta, Ligurai
  • Lombardia, Emilia-Romagna
  • Piemonte
  • Trentino, Alto Adige
  • Veneto
  • Friuli-Venezia Giulia

  • Official, full-color Italian Wine Scholar Unit 1 - Northern Italy study manual
  • 1 full year of access to the Italian Wine Scholar Online
  • San Francisco Wine School Water Bottle
  • IWS pin and certificate upon successful completion of the complete program
Beginner Students should also consider taking Italian Wine Professional before attempting the more rigorous Italian Wine Scholar.

Refund Policy

Cancellations and reschedules for full programs are accepted up to 1 week prior to the start of the course with an option to transfer full credit to a future class OR receive a full refund.  Full program students who give at least 2 business days notice of their absence in an individual workshop within a regularly scheduled program may make up their missed class at the next available session.  No further make ups will be allowed.  

WSET by Grape Experience provides no refunds after a program has begun.  If you need to cancel registration in any other program after the 1 week notice period, you will be refunded $70 for each class that you do not attend with a minimum notice of 2 business days. Study guides and any other course material must be returned in unused condition or the cost of the materials will be deducted from the total refund.

If you need transfer to a future program after the 1 week notice period, a $150 transfer fee will be collected at that time.  All transfers must be initiated and paid in full before the conclusion of the original program.  With the exception of WSET by Grape Experience programs, your registration is fully transferable to another person for the same program and session with no fees.

There are no refunds available for individual workshops or special events.  Reschedules for the next available date are accepted for individual recurring workshops up to 2 business days prior to the originally scheduled date.  Reschedules are not available for special events.

If you are unable to attend a program, workshop or event and are not eligible for a reschedule or refund, consider offering your seat to a friend or colleague.  They will love you!  Notice for all cancellations, reschedules and transfers must be given by emailing [email protected]

Our gorgeous new 4,000 sq ft top floor wine education center is located directly across from City Hall in charming downtown South San Francisco. Our sunlight-filled wine education center boasts 16-ft high coved ceilings, eight 12-ft tall windows, and gorgeous 180 degree views of the San Bruno Mountains, City Hall and the San Francisco Bay. South San Francisco is 9 miles from downtown San Francisco, conveniently located next to San Francisco International Airport and the 280/380/101 interchange halfway between the airport and the former Candlestick Park. San Francisco Wine School is located downtown just blocks from Highway 101 at the intersection of Grand Ave and Maple Ave.
