Class Description

Description

Explore the distinctive facets and rich characteristics of North American wine regions and viticultural traditions.

Canadian Icewine and Napa Cabernet Sauvignon represent merely the beginning of an exciting and fascinating exploration of North American wine diversity. This comprehensive course traces the long and complex history of grape growing and viticulture throughout North America and honors the pioneering trailblazers and innovative winemakers behind the most iconic wines and hidden gem producers creating exceptional wines on the continent today. You'll learn about the distinctive terroirs, unique climate influences, and distinctive winemaking traditions that shape these world-renowned beverages and create their individual character and quality.

The United States is the world's fourth-largest wine-producing nation, with a thriving and dynamic industry spanning from the Atlantic coast to the Pacific. California's renowned Napa Valley and Sonoma regions produce exceptional Cabernet Sauvignons, Pinot Noirs, and Chardonnays of international acclaim. Oregon contributes outstanding Pinot Noirs with distinctive character. Washington State produces remarkable Merlots and Cabernet Sauvignons that rival their California counterparts. Beyond these renowned and established regions, emerging wine regions in New York, Texas, Michigan, and elsewhere are rapidly gaining international recognition for their quality wines and innovative winemaking approaches and techniques.

Canada's wine regions, particularly in British Columbia and Ontario, produce distinctive and memorable wines, including the famous Icewines made from grapes frozen on the vine under ideal conditions, creating intensely sweet and complex flavor profiles and aromas that are unique and highly prized. The diversity of North American wines reflects the continent's remarkably varied climates, distinctive soils, and rich cultural influences on winemaking practices and traditions. Understanding these regional differences helps you select wines that match your palate and food pairings.
