Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this bookbinding class:

Gain creativity and daily peace of mind by learning Japanese ink brush painting and calligraphy, which are deeply related to Zen. While learning fundamental brush and ink handling and brush strokes, challenge yourself to create original works of art.

Required supplies for this program:

*For the first class:s

  • some bamboo brushes (At least one large bamboo brush)
  • craft felt (approximately 24""x30"") to place under the paper
  • paper towels or rags as needed
  • a palette; a medium size porcelain 6-well flower  palette(about 6 inches in diameter)  is recommended. 
  • Some small plain porcelain plates can be substituted.
  • a small bottle of ink
  • 2 water bowls(for clean water to dilute sumi and for cleaning brushes)
  • Hanshi(rice paper) for sumi-e and/or calligraphy. Newsprint can be substituted for the first day
  • a paper weight

Other Supplies, recommended supplies and supply shops will be discussed at first class:

  • watercolors or a 12colors set of Gansai Japanese colors
  • shikishi boards for final projects
  • decent quality paper
  • a brush holder
  • a brush roll
  • a water dropper
  • decent brushes of various sizes
  • a sumi-stick and a suzuri (grinding stone)

Refund Policy

When class/workshop enrollment is below the minimum three days prior to the first day of class, the class may be cancelled. If there is a cancellation, we will contact registered students at least 2 days before the start of the class/workshop by email or by phone.

We will offer students the option to transfer into another class or receive a full refund for the amount paid.

Classes are not refunded due to failure to attend class, planned absences, minor illnesses, or vacations.

If you drop a class:

  • If you drop a class at least 8 business days before it starts, you will receive a 100% refund minus a $20 administrative fee.
  • If you drop a class between 7 to 2 business days before it starts, there are no refunds. At this point students may receive a class credit if the school is able to replace your seat with another student before the start of class. If this is not possible, crediting will not be offered.
  • If you drop a class on or after the class start date, no refunds or credits are possible.

Transfers:

  • If you transfer to from one class to another class of equal value or more, there is no administrative fee.
  • Otherwise an admin fee will be charged for transfers.

In any event where a customer wants to cancel their enrollment and is eligible for a full refund, a 5% processing fee will be deducted from the refund amount.
