The Santa Monica Pier is home to a world of entertainment, from carousel rides to shopping to arcades. But it is also an amazing place for photographers to experiment, sharpen their skills, and capture beautiful evening photographs. Join your Digital Photo Academy instructor to photograph the sunset over the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Monica Pier at dusk.
You will photograph passerbys, the boardwalk, and of course, the sunset over the Pacific Ocean. Witnessing the sunset over the water through your camera lens not only offers you the memories of this breathtaking experience, but also provides you with incredible images so you can share your memories and keep them forever.
With the timing of this particular shoot, you will have the opportunity to photograph during day-light and at dusk. Both types of lighting can present unique challenges. At dusk and in-low light, for example, flash can be helpful, but it can provide harsh lighting that alters the image you were hoping to get. In this shoot, you will learn new compositional techniques to handle low-light and night-time shooting to capture the vivid colors of the sunset and the tranquility of the water.
We will meet right outside of the take out window at Soda Jerks, located at 200 Santa Monica Pier, Santa Monica, CA 90401, next to the historic carousel building. You should bring your DSLR or another type of camera that you use, a fully-charged battery, and the equipment that you can carry. It would be helpful to bring a tripod if you have one to utilize long exposures, though you will also learn other means to steady your camera without a tripod. You should also dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes.
Each Composition in the Field class begins with a talk with one of our experienced instructors, and then you and your fellow students take a stroll through one of a variety of photogenic locales (in any of the 20+ cities the DPA encapsulates). There is street photography, magnificent interiors, farmers markets, zoos, landscapes, and more, photos of which are included within. These photos are a mix of student and instructor images in many different venues and cities across the United States and Canada.
You will have fun in the three-hour session, learn to shoot strategically, get more interesting photos of the event, and walk away with a foundation to improve your photographs in the future, whether you’re traveling, or at a birthday party and everywhere in between.
