This intermediate course will highlight the ability of Autodesk Moldflow Insight to provide guidance to product and tooling designers on how to manufacture fiber reinforced thermoplastic materials. The course will highlight special considerations that designers and injection molders need to consider to take full advantage of both long and short fiber reinforced materials.
The theory of fiber orientation, and it's implications on mechanical performance and material shrinkage/warpage will be discussed. Additionally, the student will learn the workflow for how to take the fiber orientation predicted in the injection molding simulation and map it to a structural analysis mesh to create a more realistic material card for part design optimization. All mapping techniques will be performed in Autodesk Helius, and will be imported into Autodesk Inventor. After the class, the student will be able to: Understand the implications on part performance of fiber reinforcements in thermoplastic resins, Understand the implication on mold design and processing of fiber reinforcements in thermoplastic resins, Properly select the correct fiber orientation models for both short or long fibers, Be able to export the fiber orientation from an injection-molding simulation, and map it to a structural mesh.
