You will need a reliable Internet connection as well as a computer or device with which you can access your virtual class. We recommend you arrive to class 5-10 minutes early to ensure you're able to set up your device and connection.

What you'll learn in this crafts class:

Make your sumi-e and/or calligraphy ready for framing and display by mounting/backing them to flatten and strengthen!

This workshop demonstrates how to make traditional glue that has been used for mounting masters’ pieces for hundreds of years and is still used in museums for restoration, and how to mount your work with backing paper with the glue. Information for tools and materials is covered in workshop.

Material List For Mounting:

  • Sumi-e and/or calligraphy
  • 2 Hake/ Flat painting brushes 4-6 inch wide ¼ to ½ inch thick
  • 2 Hake/ Flat painting brushes 4-6 inch wide and ½ to 1inch thick
  • A Sushioke of 12inch diameter or bigger or a Cocking Pad
  • A plexiglass or a wooden board (10 inch longer each side, height and width, than your work or bigger)
  • -Mounting paper (at least 2inch longer than each side of your work)
  • glue

Seal Making for Sumi-e and Calligraphy

Make your sumi-e and/or calligraphy ready for framing and display by stamping a seal that proves that the artwork is done by you. This workshop covers how to make your own seal: how to design your name or a motto in Tensho that is a special Kanji script for a seal. Demonstrations of how to transfer your design to the seal stone and how to carve it on the stone are covered.

  • A soap stone
  • A pencil
  • A small piece of paper
  • A small brush
  • Red-ink stick
  • A grinding stone
  • A carving knife
  • A couple of coarse and fine sand paper

  • This class is designed for Adults and accepts mature students 16+.

How To Participate: You will receive an email 30 minutes before class starts with a link to the class and access instructions.


Remote Learning

This course is available for "remote" learning and will be available to anyone with access to an internet device with a microphone (this includes most models of computers, tablets). Classes will take place with a "Live" instructor at the date/times listed below.

Upon registration, the instructor will send along additional information about how to log-on and participate in the class.

Refund Policy
When class/workshop enrollment is below the minimum five days prior to the first day of class, the class may be cancelled. If there is a cancellation, we will contact registered students at least 4 days before the start of the class/workshop by email or by phone.

We will offer students the option to transfer into another class or receive a full refund for the amount paid.

Classes are not refunded due to failure to attend class, planned absences, minor illnesses, or vacations.

If you drop a class:
  • You will receive a 100% refund minus a $15 administrative fee if you drop a class at least 7 days before it starts. 
  • You will receive a 50% refund minus a $15 administrative fee if you drop a class after this point but before the second day of class. 
  • There are no refunds after the second class.
If you drop a workshop:
  • You will receive a 100% refund minus a $15 administrative fee if you drop a class at least 7 days before it starts. No refunds or credit will be given after this point.
