Class Description

Description

Build a strong and comprehensive artistic foundation through still life drawing in this middle school-level course. Designed specifically for student artists ages 11 to 14, this course emphasizes essential drawing techniques, including mark-making, observational drawing skills, and proper composition fundamentals. The course guides you systematically toward creating thoughtfully composed still life drawings that demonstrate mastery of foundational artistic principles.

Class 1: Exploring Your Artistic Tools. In the opening session, you'll thoroughly investigate the complete range of available drawing tools and materials, from various pencil types and specialized drawing materials to your most important artistic tools: your own eyes, hands, and observational abilities. You'll learn how different tools create different effects and marks.

Class 2: Building Form and Dimension. During the second session, you'll study the principles of how light and value work together in creating visual interest and depth. You'll discover through careful observation and precise rendering of values, how objects appear three-dimensional on your two-dimensional paper surface through proper shading and tonal variation.

Class 3: Creating Balanced Compositions. For the third class, you'll explore the fundamental design principle of Balance and its importance in creating visually compelling artwork. You'll be guided in setting up your own still-life arrangement and drawing from direct observation of your personal creation, applying what you've learned about composition.

Class 4: Refining Your Skills and Technique. The final session focuses on strengthening and reinforcing the techniques you've learned throughout the course. You'll receive personalized feedback and constructive guidance from your experienced teaching artist to help you continue progressing in your artistic development.

Materials Note: For health and safety reasons, we cannot accommodate dry pastels, open ink containers, acrylic paints, or paints other than watercolor during class sessions.
