Discover the complete pottery-making process in this intensive four-week crash course offered in New York City.
If you are curious about pottery and uncertain whether you want to commit to a full eight-week course, this accelerated version offers the perfect introduction. Complete beginners can experience the potter's wheel firsthand with no prior experience necessary.
This pottery class meets for four consecutive weeks with two dedicated throwing sessions, plus additional sessions where you will finish, customize, and apply color to your completed pieces.
- During your first class, you will learn the essential basics of wheel throwing to create simple forms on the potter's wheel. Your instructor will guide you through each step as you practice. You will have multiple opportunities to refine your technique until you produce a piece you are satisfied with.
- In week two, you can apply your developing muscle memory and create additional pieces while experimenting with new shapes and sizes.
- The third session focuses on refining your work by smoothing contours, adding handles, and carving details that make each piece uniquely yours.
- During the final class, you will learn glazing techniques, the process of decorating and coloring your pottery using liquid glass suspension. Multiple color options and surface finishes are available, with both dipping and painting application methods.
All pieces you create will be ready for pickup one week after the final class and will be held for three weeks. Pickup is available at our Zerimar Clay location.
This course is ideal for students who want to experience every stage of clay work, from the initial wheel-throwing through finishing and firing. You will gain hands-on experience in all phases of the pottery creation process. While you won't become an expert, you will have completed work from every stage.
If you are looking to develop a new and rewarding hobby, pottery offers the opportunity to work directly with clay, relax and unwind, and create distinctive handmade ceramic pieces to treasure.
Please note: Completed works must be picked up within three weeks of the final class.
Important Note: Public class dates require a minimum of 2 registered guests to run. If we do not reach this enrollment minimum, the class will be cancelled. We will notify you promptly and offer either a full refund or the option to reschedule, so please monitor your email and SMS communications one day prior to the scheduled class.
Note:
We are excited to share the joy of clay with you! Please note that when you book a class with us, you are paying for the instructional experience, studio time, materials, and the guidance of our instructors, rather than a guaranteed finished product.
Ceramics is an unpredictable art form that goes through many stages—from shaping and drying to complex bisque and glaze firings. While we do our very best to guide your pieces safely through the kiln, ceramics can occasionally crack, warp, or break during the firing process due to natural physical properties.
Complimentary Firing: As a complimentary part of the class experience, we include the firing and glazing for one piece per person (selected by you at the end of the session).
No Guarantees: Because of the inherent risks involved in firing pottery, finished pieces are not guaranteed, and studio fees are non-refundable in the rare event that a piece is damaged during the firing process.
We appreciate your understanding and look forward to getting our hands dirty with the creative process together!
