The new retrospective, Alberto Burri: The Trauma of Painting, delves into the healing power of art. Italian doctor-turned-artist, Alberto Burri (1915-1995), served as a medic during World War II, but began painting while he was a prisoner of war in Texas. Upon his release, it became his full-time career and deep passion. By stitching burlap and other found materials into textured collages, Burri reenacted the healing process he’d preformed as a doctor, and also helped himself recover from the trauma of war. For the first time in more than 35 years, these fragile, poignant works are on view together, all in Frank Lloyd Wright’s iconic spiral.
