Designing Comic Covers and Interiors

In this 4 hour workshop, Jason will lead students through the process of creating a narrative and then adapting it to one cover illustration and an associated comic page. Students will leave with a much clearer idea of how to develop and depict their ideas with depth and expression.

Jason produces most of his comic work on an iPad, in the Procreate App. Students are welcome to bring any drawing or painting materials that they are comfortable with, analog or digital. The content of the workshop is applicable to all mediums. Jason will be able to advise on technical considerations for each.

Students are encouraged to bring concept and sketch work to class, to speed up their production process.

THE WORKSHOP WILL INCLUDE:

1. A 20-minute presentation of Jason's work and biography, with audience Q & A.
2. A 40-minute demonstration of Jason working (20 minutes on a cover illustration, 20 minutes on an interior).
3. A 20-minute writing and sketching session.
• Each student will begin drafting their own comic page and cover. Jason will rotate round the class to make sure that everyone has a good start.
4. A 20 minute writing critique
• Students will quickly present their ideas to the rest of the class. Jason and the students will provide feedback on the clarity and visual possibility for each story.
5. A 40 minute sketching session
• Students will begin sketching for their finished comic covers and interiors. Jason will rotate round the class and advise as necessary. He’ll be available to answer questions as needed.
6. A 20 minute critique
• Students will do another quick round of presentations on what they’ve sketched. Jason and students will provide another round feedback.
7. A 1 hour working session
• Students will continue work on their covers and interiors. Jason will advise and answer questions.
8. A 20 minute review and critique with Q&A
• The class will have review each students’ production, giving final advice on concept and execution.

Bring any materials you prefer, but recommended materials are:

• Basic Drawing Materials (Pencil, Ink, Eraser, Sketchbook)
• Basic Watercolor Materials (Paints, Water, Brushes, Watercolor Paper)
• iPad or other tablet with drawing software
