Description
Class Level: Beginner
Age Requirements: 14 and older
Average Class Size: 12
Teacher: Daniel Valencia

What you'll learn in this jewelry class:

In this beginning level jewelry making class, learn the basic techniques of metalsmithing. During the eight week course you will create a minimum of four professionally finished projects (for example, rings, earrings, pendants or bracelets) in sterling silver while learning layout, sawing, forging, texturing, filing, polishing, soldering, and basic stone setting. You will learn the correct way to build a heavy bezel setting, and to set the stone in your heavy bezel with a hammer and punch.

Bezel wire is NEVER used at Jewelryclassdc, all bezels are handmade, and heavy.

Learn the proper tool techniques and safety practices which will allow you to express yourself artistically in metal.

Beginning students receive precise direction but are provided with the opportunity to utilize their creativity. You will be introduced to all the wonderful tools in a modern goldsmithing studio and each week’s session will increase your tool skills and knowledge.

Students should not wear loose clothing and should be able to tie their hair back.

Masks will be worn during sessions, if you do not have a mask one will be provided. Gloves will be worn when using common equipment. If you do not have gloves a pair will be provided. Benches have been spaced out, with plexiglass installed, and the studio will be cleaned after each session. Demos will be shown on a big screen.

Question from Anonymous
A question for Dan - I would like to take this with my 13 year old who is experienced in working with metals. Can you take an age exception. Also, we're away for 2 of the session - can we pick these ones up in the fall or just pay for part of the course?
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
HI there! Please see the instructor's response: " I would and have made exceptions for young ones with some experience. We currently have a 12-year-old, and a 13-year-old studying. We have a liberal makeup policy, if you know the dates you will be gone we can make them up in advance, or upon your return easily."

We had a really small class just 4 of us. Dan gives great instruction - he demos each part of the process and then will provide additional assistance through each step of making your pieces. The studio is well equipped and they take COVID seriously with dividers between workstations and requiring masks and gloves (both provided) to all who enter. I’m already signed up for Metals 2!

I really enjoyed the class. You will learn proper techniques from highly skilled instructors to build a good foundation for starting your metal-smithing experience. The benches used are well appointed with quality tools and equipment making it easy to learn the right way to do things. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in learning how to make sterling silver jewelry.
