Class Description

Description

Learn to draw the human figure from a live model, where you'll apply fundamental principles of form, proportion, gesture, and movement. This course focuses on developing your ability to accurately capture the human body through disciplined observation and traditional drawing techniques.

During this class, you'll build essential artistic skills, including improved observational accuracy, enhanced hand-eye coordination, and the ability to work across different time-frame poses from quick sketches to longer, more detailed studies. You'll learn human proportions through careful study of a live model, develop mark-making skills using charcoal, and master working with lines, shapes, and value to create depth and dimension. By the end of the course, you'll be able to draw in a loose, expressive style while maintaining anatomical accuracy.

Each week, you'll create multiple sketches of the session's live model, building your experience, confidence, and knowledge through consistent practice. Over the course of the class, you'll gain a comprehensive understanding of how to draw from life and successfully capture the human form.

Important note about the model: Models will wear minimal covering over private areas, with minimal interference to the drawing of the human body, while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries. They will not be fully nude nor fully clothed.

Supply list for week one: This studio class requires you to bring your own supplies. Please have the following materials available:

  • 18" by 24" Newsprint paper pad
  • Strathmore Newsprint Smooth paper pad
  • Vine charcoal in soft grades, various sizes
  • Charcoal pencils in both hard and soft grades
  • Graphite pencils in both hard and soft grades
  • Kneaded eraser
  • Drawing board with clips (large enough for your newsprint paper, plus extra clips to keep paper stable)
  • One-time fee of $65 per student to cover model fees for all five weeks, payable to Art on 30th during week one
