Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this collage class:

Spark your creativity by learning how to make a collage and using it as a starting point for an abstract painting. As a hands-on workshop, we will spend the majority of time making artwork and sharing our progress with the group.

We will also look at work by collage artists and abstract painters for inspiration, discuss elements of design, and explore color mixing in paint. The workshop is open to painters and mixed media artists of all levels of experience.

Materials Lists:

Class 1:

  • One sheet of blank paper (can use 8.5" x 11" copy paper (the back of a recycled page is okay) or a sturdier sheet of paper, like drawing paper, bristol paper, or mixed media paper 9” x 12” or similar size)
  • Scissors
  • Modge Podge, Glue stick, or any glue that will stick paper to paper
  • Old magazines with images or old paintings on paper you can cut up for collage reference

Class 2 and 3:

  • If using acrylic or oil, two surfaces to paint on: either canvas, wood panel, or gessoed cardboard. If using watercolor, two sheets of watercolor paper. Minimum size 8" x 8".
  • Pencil and eraser
  • Paints: Recommended colors: 1. warm red (cadmium red - look for non-cadmium formula, vermillion, or pyrrol scarlet) 2. cool red (alizarin crimson, carmine, or quinacridone rose), 3. warm blue (phthalo or cerulean) 4. cool blue (ultramarine) 5. yellow (hansa yellow, azo yellow, cadmium yellow - look for non-cadmium formula, or permanent yellow) 6. white (titanium or zinc)
  • Brushes: a variety is great, but a small round brush (size 1, 2, or 3) and a medium round brush (size 6, 7, or 8) would be most versatile.
  • Water container
  • Rags or paper towels
  • Paper palette or white palette

Optional:

  • Palette Knife for acrylic or oil
  • Solvent for oil paints (if using oils, please come to class with prior knowledge on how to care for oils and their proper disposal)
