Learn how to create stunning images through layers of ink and drawing materials! Monotype printing is an immediate and playful form of printmaking, often described as a “printed paintings” or “painterly prints.”
Monotypes can also be a drawing process, which Paul Klee was an exponent of this process. He referred to this body of work as “transfer drawings.”
This easily accessible medium allows both novices and experienced artists of all ages to create finished images in relatively few steps. Brayers, paint brushes, drawing tools and paper will be used to apply ink and also to mask areas.
Students will learn about printmaking inks, paper, pressure, and how they interact to create a broad range of aesthetic possibilities. Demonstrations will also include using a table-top etching press, printing by hand, and experimenting with textures and collage materials.
In the first week, we’ll cover the process for making trace monotypes, becoming familiar with water-based Akua Intaglio Inks. In the second week, we’ll cover additive and reductive monotype approaches, using oil-based Caligo Safe Wash Inks and R&F Pigment Sticks.
By the end of the workshop, you will have several prints that can be stand alone art or used with other media.

The building that is now Art on 30th once housed the Morse Security Company. We have left the original mosaic logo in the lobby floor as an homage to the building’s history.
