Importantly, this is not a drawing class. This is a visual storytelling class that will give you all of the technical tools needed to create a graphic novel. The focus is primarily on layout and the basics of presenting a story in visual form. Neil is great teacher -- very clear that he cares -- and he is, quite admittedly -- pressed for time. He could easily fill two or three additional hours per session without breaking a sweat. Class structure involves critiques on the previous week's work, which involves laying out a page of script in visual form. Again, drawing skill is not the focus. Instead, Neil focuses on the ability to tell the story graphically. Rough storyboards suffice as long as the point is clearly made. The second part of each session consists of an in class drawing exercise designed to push the student into creative ways to explore simple characters and situations, which is followed by a brief lecture. The class does skew heavily -- perhaps a bit too heavily -- towards in-class critiques -- to the detriment of the teacher's lectures, which he is often forced to rush through. A 50/50 split (or less) may have been more effective, especially if homework was turned in and the teacher offered a few notes at the next session. Overall, a very solid class that is well worth the time and money. After the class, I feel that I have all of the skills necessary to move forward on my project with confidence.
