Humor-writing: An Online Workshop with Elissa Bassist
Whether you want to write funnier or make friends as an adult, in this four-week workshop experience we’ll gossip about the many ways to do both.
To get started, we’ll read funny personal essays by our favorites to steal the tricks they used to write them. We’ll also:
We’ll cover the revelation essay, the mortification essay, the “that one time…” essay, the funny op-ed, the personal essay/cultural criticism hybrid, and the stylish & self-effacing essay. Spoiler: you’ll draft your own and workshop it in a supportive, celebratory environment.
What to look forward to: hilarious readings; in-class brainstorming; writing exercises; excessive handouts; solicited and unsolicited advice; and more, a lot more.
Week 1: Introductions and lecture on forms that references assigned readings (to be read before class). Homework is to brainstorm potential topics and devise clear, unusual angles.
Week 2: Pitching topics: what are you thinking of writing about and who will win the current season of The Bachelor? In-class feedback on pitches and lecture on everything a funny personal essay needs. Homework is to write a “shitty first draft” (see: Anne Lamott’s Bird by Bird) between 500 and 1,000 words (not to share in class).
Week 3: Lecture: how to step up your game and turn a personal essay into a funny one. Homework is to write a less shitty second draft to workshop in our final week together (again between 500 and 1,000 words). Between classes students will read their peers’ essays and then prepare written and verbal feedback for workshop.
Week 4: Workshop (students will get praise/suggestions and meticulous line edits from the instructor). Lecture on pitching/submitting and honest answers about publication. Homework is to miss me.
Writers may bring in a work-in-progress or start from scratch. Sexts won’t be accepted at this time.
