Isabel Urbina Peña is an Art Director originally from Venezuela. She runs her own studio in Greenpoint, focusing in book cover design, lettering, typeface design and experimental handwriting.

In 2015, she was named a New Visual Artist: 15 under 30 by PRINT Magazine. She's a Type@Cooper and ProDiseño Alumna. Her work has been recognized by The New York Times, Buzzfeed and the AIGA.

In her spare time she teaches, speaks at conferences worldwide, draws zines and runs Yes, Equal, a database of women in the creative fields.

Brush Marker Lettering

I definitely learned a lot and grew as a brush-lettering artist throughout the period. Personally, as a teacher, I had two frustrations: - the demo was done in the corner of the table where only half the group coupd easily see it. The teacher ahould have sat in the middle of the long side of the table, so that everyone could easily see. I recieved attitude about asking her to lift up her work and show it to the geoup (I was reminded that we were told to stand up and come closer but, I’m sorry, I didn’t pay to do that) - the teacher went over my work (and work I was REALLY proud of and mentioned this to her) saying that it was done incorrectly and needed to look a different way. She literally ruined work I did to “improve” it. That is a BIG instructor no-no, in the world of education. Otherwise, I was happy with the course and look forward to the next one I can sign up for

Isabel was a good instructor, checking in with each participant multiple times. It would have been nice to have a better way to see her writing out letters, maybe a document camera with a projector so we didn’t have to crowd around behind her to watch over her shoulder.

I really enjoyed this brush lettering class! It was perfect for beginners and gave me a lot of great materials and resources to keep practicing. The instructor was helpful and sweet - couldn’t have asked for anything more!
