Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this metal working class:

Have you ever thought about what kind of person handcrafts their own kitchen knives? It may sound like the stuff of legends, but in just two 4 hour sessions, that person could be YOU.

In this workshop, you will make a classic French Chef, a vegetable slicer, a cleaver or a utility/hunting knife (you choose!), using the reductive (stock-removal) technique.

You start with a raw, rectangular piece of annealed tool steel, then cut, shape and polish it into a bonafide kitchen blade. As the knife creator, you can customize and scale your design so your knife perfectly fits your hand.

After the first session, your young knife will remain at Craftsman Ave for hardening and tempering before you return for the second session.

In the second session (held the same day/time of the following week), you’ll create a custom brass-pinned hardwood handle for your knife and polish your blade to look exactly how you want it to (Shiny? Rugged? You decide!)

Finally, you’ll sharpen your blade to a razor’s edge using our custom sharpening jigs. Be as dramatic as you want!

If you’re interested in forging your own knife, which is knife making centered around red hot metal, hammers, and anvils, check out our Forge a Custom Knife workshop

Skill Level: No prior experience is required. This workshop is designed to introduce you to the core concepts of knife making:

  • Profiling
  • Beveling
  • Polishing
  • Handle-making
  • Sharpening

Tools and techniques: You will use various hand tools to shape your knife, including:

  • Hacksaws
  • Files
  • Sanding blocks
  • You’ll also use belt sanders and rotary tools to make your knife.

As someone who Blacksmiths and Forges a lot, this class taught me a lot of great metal working and woodworking techniques for creating a polished finished product. It's awesome to have a knife I made myself that I can now use at home. I also appreciated how knowledgeable and helpful the instructor was.

This class was so much fun! It's a lot of work, but you'll make a beautiful, sharp kitchen knife with hard steel (so it should theoretically be sharp for a while). The instructor was enthusiastic and friendly, and taught us a lot as absolute beginners. Would recommend.

Amazing class, great teacher. It was really cool, not limited really to the four choices in the description you can really put your creativity and ambition into the design. Cool space as well!

I am a fan of the show "Forge in Fire" which is what inspired me to take this class. I researched other locations that offered knife making. I found that this class was the best value of all the choices I came across. I spent the whole time in class smiling because I was having such a good time. The studio is large, stylish, and clean. Samples of what the site makes in their other classes decorate the walls. The other students were friendly and supportive. Jerod is a great teacher. He was patient with the students and guide each student to make the best knives. The class even provided beverages while students were working. I love the knife I made. It makes me feel like Rambo. Bring on the zombie apocalypse I am ready.

Hi there! Regarding the instructor Liam, after spending 4 years apprenticing with welders, blacksmiths, and motorcycle mechanics, Liam brings his metalworking knowledge to Brooklyn, hoping to help others create things that are both beautiful and practical. He hopes to one day design and builds rocket engines. Additionally, he is studying aerospace engineering at NYU.

I just took the course with Liam and thought he did an incredible job of making complex topics accessible. He is clearly passionate about this kind of work and is very approachable.
