Friendly and very patient instructor, big facility with cutting table and sewing machine room. I made a Kimono from choosing fabric, to cutting out a pattern, to sewing and trimming. I was even introduced to a Serger machine for detailed lining finish. As a novice sewer, I was so impressed and satisfied with what I learned, that I will definitely be back for sewing lab or project work.

Best Beginner Sewing Classes in Los Angeles

Sewing is a popular craft done by hand or machine that involves using needles and thread to stitch together fabric. Sewers may learn to sew so that they can create or mend garments and other fabric-based items. Although sewing is a practical skill, it’s also taken up as a fun and relaxing hobby. Sewing is used for a variety of purposes, which makes it accessible to people of all skill levels.

Why You Should Learn Sewing in Los Angeles

Sewing has shown to have positive mental and physical effects on the body. It is an activity that requires a lot of focus, which aids in stress relief. Sewing also requires extensive planning when starting a project, from creating a design to deciding what type of fabric to use. Sewing has few design limits, which allows sewers to express their creativity through their projects.

Sewing is also considered a social activity. Friends sometimes get together to work on projects. Sewing clubs and organizations in the LA area also host events and sewing workshops that encourage you to meet other local sewers.

Sewing has positive physical effects on the body. You can improve your hand-eye coordination by consistently sewing. This is because sewing requires fine attention to detail. Hand sewing requires nimble and frequent movement of the fingers and hands, which contributes to the loosening of joints. Consistent sewing has been shown to improve arthritis pain in some suffers thanks to the deft movements it requires.

In-Person Beginner Sewing Classes in Los Angeles

Beginner-level In-person sewing classes are offered in and around Los Angeles. These classes cover the basics of sewing by machine and by hand. Most sewing classes will teach the fundamentals of sewing as you work on a project. Projects range from clothing to accessories. In-person classes are taught by instructors who will make sure you understand sewing techniques and can answer your questions.

In-person classes may provide you with most or all materials necessary to take the class. However, some machine classes will require you to bring your machine to class. Check the supply list and course description of the class you plan to enroll in to find out if you need to bring supplies or equipment to class.

If you live in Los Angeles, you can enroll in an in-person sewing class on CourseHorse. Sewing 1, a beginner-level sewing class offered at The Workshop at Haley Solar in Eagle Rock, is a machine sewing class. In this course, you’ll learn the basics of machine sewing like how to thread and unthread your machine. Students are asked to bring their own sewing machine to the class so that they can familiarize themselves with it.

A beginner-level sewing class is also offered by Los Angeles City College in Hollywood. Getting to Know YOUR Sewing Machine is a machine sewing course intended to teach students the basics of machine sewing, particularly how to use their sewing machines. If you have a sewing machine and no idea how to use it, this class is perfect for learning. The instructor will go over machine basics, so you can count on learning your machines workings, feet, and accessories.

Virtual Beginner Sewing Classes

In-person sewing classes are the closest to a traditional classroom setting. They have the benefit of hands-on instruction and typically provide materials. In-person classes include face-to-face learning and allow you to socialize with your classmates. However, these classes are scheduled and require you to commute to them, so they’re not always accessible.

Meanwhile, online sewing classes offer greater accessibility. By taking place online, virtual classes eliminate the need to commute anywhere to learn how to sew. They also offer more class options, typically at a wider range of times. The main downside of virtual sewing classes is that materials are never provided, although a materials list will be available to participants. These materials can be purchased at your local craft store or online.

You can check out CourseHorse to see what new and returning online sewing classes are available to you. Once you’ve found a class that interests you, check its schedule and supplies list before enrolling.

Previous classes offered online via CourseHorse include courses in embroidery and sashiko mending. The Evanston Art Center’s embroidery classes focused on basic embroidery techniques. Taking an embroidery class will give you the chance to become more familiar with using a needle and thread.

Some people learn to sew so that they can mend their clothes. Previously, sashiko mending classes have been offered on CourseHorse. Sashiko is a traditional Japanese mending style that was previously used to mend kimonos in Japan. It has become popular among modern sewers who use it to repair garments.

Private Group Beginner Sewing Classes in Los Angeles

Arts and crafts classes can be a fun team-building activity for any business or organization. If your company is interested in this, CourseHorse offers live online group arts, crafts, and design classes. They are currently offering private online group classes in embroidery and macrame that can accommodate up to 500 people, depending on class type. Classes are beginner-friendly, making them ideal for any type of team.

If your team is interested in the basics of embroidery, CourseHorse offers a virtual Modern Embroidery Art class. This class accommodates up to 500 people. A live-online instructor will walk them through preparing an embroidery hoop and selecting thread. This is a beginner-level class with no prior experience in stitching necessary.

Two macrame classes are being offered for groups through CourseHorse. These workshops guide participants through the creation of their own macrame projects. In the virtual Macrame Workshop groups will work on creating a plant hanger that they can use to hang plants upon completion. This particular workshop accepts up to 500 people. The virtual Macrame Moon Dream Catcher class is a smaller macrame class that can accommodate up to 100 people, as they work on a moon-shaped dream catcher.

If your group is interested in learning a craft not mentioned, CourseHorse can do a custom class that best suits your team's interests. 20-minute demos are available so that groups may see what a class is like before committing to it. If your group size is likely to change, CourseHorse allows alterations in group size after booking. You may also request to reschedule your class for free up to 48 hours before the session.

Materials are needed for these classes, but they are all provided by CourseHorse. CourseHorse collects the addresses of participants ahead of the session and mail them their material kits. A variety of online platforms are supported by CourseHorse, including Zoom, Google Meets, Microsoft Teams, and WebEx.
