Kegg's Candies

Kegg’s Candies began humbly with the young Kegg’s brothers experimenting with chocolate candy recipes in the kitchen of their mom’s home in the spring of 1946. The boys took a serious interest in perfecting the finest tasting confections using nothing but the best ingredients available. Their goal was to create recipes that would not only stand out but stand the test of time. Robert Kegg realized very quickly that he was destined to be a master candy maker. Having perfected the recipes to his satisfaction, Mr. Kegg set up his first candy kitchen and shop in the Rice Village later that year and a legendary Houston institution was born.

Kegg’s Candies quickly gained a reputation for making the finest premium handmade confectionery treats in Houston. Using fresh Texas pecans, the Kegg’s family recipe for its “signature” Pecan Crisp was soon introduced for many future generations of Houstonians to enjoy. The recipe creates a Pecan Crisp that’s not brittle-with less crunch and less sugar because of the pecan’s natural sweetness. The Kegg’s also became known for their nut melt-aways, hand cooked creams, pecan treats as well as pecan and almond nut clusters and barks. Before long, the business carried a full line of milk and dark chocolate boxed assortments, fudges, divinity, hundreds of molded chocolate shapes and the largest selection of traditional chocolates and confections in the market place.

In 2009, the business was expanded significantly. The Beechnut Street retail store location was moved into a new retail space in the existing Meyer Park shopping center location and doubled in size. The new re-designed store layout and colorful retro red and white theme allows loyal customers the convenience of shopping at their long time location in a much larger store with a wider selection of Kegg’s products. 

Also in 2009, Kegg’s Candies moved into a new 11,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art customer friendly chocolate factory production facility, which also includes a colorful red and white retro themed 2,000 sq. ft. retail store. The new factory was designed and built to host factory tours with a separate tour entrance and a 90 foot long glass wall exposing a clear view of the entire chocolate making process. Additionally, the facility contains two large activities rooms for hosting birthday parties, kids chocolate camps, and adult chocolate making classes. The new facility is located on Westpark Drive between Hillcroft and Dunvale streets.
