Through the Learning Center, Houston Center for Photography offers over 300 workshops to the general public each year. We present workshops for both film and digital photographers of all levels.

Photographers can choose topics they are interested in or follow a curriculum guide to learn the basics of photography. Workshops and courses are held on-site at Houston Center for Photography in the critique room and digital darkroom as well as off-site in the field, at artist studios, or at the facility of one of our partner organizations.

Houston Center for Photography's Mission is to increase society's understanding and appreciation of photography and its evolving role in contemporary culture. HCP strives to encourage artists, build audiences, stimulate dialogue, and promote inquiry about photography and related media through education, exhibitions, publications, fellowship programs, and community collaboration.

Intro to Studio Lighting: Still Life & Product

I’m a beginner photographer who barely knows how to use the DSRL camera, especially the manual mode, but this class pushes me and motivates me to learn and take control of the camera, loving more the photography art. I was able to learn about different types of studio lights, the equipment needed, how to measure the light, and how to place your object and background. The teacher was very well knowledgeable his experience with photography I know made a big plus!. I was before the class thinking, yes I can learn or these in social media, google, etc. yes sure all we can. But let me tell you something, nothing like getting the chance to learn from one of the best photographers and getting the chance to practice in a photography studio. After the class a get I knew for sure that still life, and product photography was my path to follow as a photographer.

I really loved the class. The teacher was amazing and took her time explaining aperture, shutter speed, and ISO in detail for those of us who needed it. The homework that was assigned is what was most beneficial in applying what we learned in class. Again our teacher was extremely encouraging and engaging.
