Level 1 Workshop Modules

General Physical Preparation
This module will consist of the basics of strength training for athletes. We’ll start with fundamental simple joint movements to prepare the body for more athletic strength training and specific/specialized strength training. Also to discuss the injury prevention contribution of general physical preparation (GPP) particularly for younger athletes.

Fundamental Athletic Movements
Running, jumping, cutting, throwing are all paramount for any sport you play. The amount and frequency with which you may use any/all of these movements will depend on your sport and role in that sport. The basics of strength for each of these movements are critical in an athlete succeeding across sports. In so many cases, novice, particularly young athletes are a being forced to bypass the basics of kinematic awareness and body control.

Assessment
*A Chain is Only as Strong as Its Weakest Link*
Initial and ongoing assessment is one of the most important things you can do with your athletes in ANY sport. Improvement of what an athlete is already strong at is relatively simple. Increase the intensity, volume, and repetitions and they’ll continue to improve. The rate of improvement will decrease exponentially with repetition to a point where you’ll see less and less “return on investment” of the time spent.
This is why it’s so much more important to work on what the athlete lacks. As a coach, you should always be looking for flaws in your athlete’s mechanics and skills. The most important thing we can do for our athletes is to continually work to identify what is their biggest limitation, and work to remove that limitation. It’s amazing how a limiting factor can impact the rest of the body’s performance of a skill.

Block Periodization and Long Term Athlete Development
Starting as a child or novice adult. Obviously, the earlier an athlete starts training in life, the stronger, more complete athlete they can become. During the maturation process, athletes experience “windows of maximum opportunity for development” (Refer to LTAD, Istavan Balyi)

The Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model is really just the next higher level of block periodization as created by the Soviet sports scientists in the 70s and 80s. The earlier in life that an athlete begins to train for sport, the more important the long term plan is. With that, it’s crucial for athletes of all ages to have an annual periodization plan to account for training, practice and the competitive periods. This PLAN needs to contain a schedule of training and milestones/goals to be accomplished while preparing for the competitive period.

Level 2 Workshop

Running 101
Examine the basics of running. Starting with the subtle differences between the mechanics of sprinting and endurance running. From there, examine the specifics of the phases and mechanics of each phase of the running cycle.

Jumping 101
Examine and discuss the importance of jumping and landing in game situations as well as jumping as it pertains to the training environment. Who needs to jump? Why do you need to jump? When and how frequently should we be jumping?

Throwing 101
Many sports require varying amounts of throwing as part of the game. Regardless of this, different forms of throwing are extremely beneficial to ALL athlete performance. Additionally the strength and power production involved with, throwing, swinging, hitting, punching are all identical. The main difference in these actions comes from what you do with your arm and hand. When it comes down to it, it may be more appropriate to label this section “Rotational Power Development”

Video Biomechanical Analysis
So, how do you determine where you need to place the most emphasis in your training? You need to perform an assessment of each individual athlete and their specific skills to determine their strengths and weaknesses. In so many instances, it will appear that an action is or is not happening the way we want when observed with the unaided eyes. More often than not, the same action will appear vastly different when viewed in super slow motion or frame to frame. This is because the human eye limits how much we can see of the one thing we’re able to focus on at any one time.

In this section, we’ll discuss not only the importance of video analysis in training athletes, but also techniques to use to ensure quality and consistency of your analysis. There are many factors that can affect your ability to perform an analysis properly and more importantly compare an old analysis to a new one. Comparison of mechanics is just as important as measuring speed, and power.

If/when you don’t see the expected progress of a measureable performance test, how are you going to determine where to turn to figure out how to gain that progress.
