Class Description

Description

This seven-week course is designed for anyone interested in learning the fundamentals of sketch comedy writing. Throughout the course, you will discuss, practice, and refine comedic scenes that will culminate in a staged performance for an audience. Each weekly session focuses on a specific aspect of sketch comedy craft, covering topics such as finding the foundational "game" of a sketch, developing compelling characters, and using improvisation as a creative springboard.

Through guided exploration, you will examine what makes sketches memorable and entertaining. You will develop practical skills in character creation and learn various approaches to generating original material from a blank page. What makes certain sketches hilarious? How do successful sketch writers approach character development? What creative strategies help you move from initial ideas to finished comedy? These and other questions will be explored in a welcoming, low-pressure environment where the emphasis is on having fun while learning. While there is no single formula for writing great sketch comedy, this introductory course will help emerging writers discover multiple doors into the craft and give you the tools to experiment with each one.

Please Note: Class sessions may conclude up to 30 minutes earlier than the scheduled end time, depending on the total number of enrolled participants.
