Class Description

Description

Learn to knit socks and master more complex knitting projects in this three-part advanced workshop. This course is designed for intermediate knitters ready to expand their skill set and tackle challenging patterns.

During this workshop, you will work through the Shorty Sock by Summer Lee Design Co. (Basic B version). The course covers essential sock-knitting techniques and skills:

  • Using the magic loop knitting technique
  • Creating and turning a heel flap
  • Picking up stitches properly
  • Shaping techniques using decreases
  • Grafting using Kitchener Stitch
  • Following complex sock patterns

Due to the deliberate pace of hand knitting, you will likely not complete the entire sock during class hours. However, instruction will cover all the most challenging techniques, preparing you thoroughly to finish the project on your own. This class moves at a fast pace and represents the most advanced knitting instruction offered. You will receive knitting homework to complete between sessions.

Please note: The 2nd session will take place at The BCC Annex, our event space down the street from our shop at 37 Greenpoint Ave)

Skill Requirements:

This is an advanced-level workshop requiring confidence in fundamental knitting skills practiced recently. We recommend completing at least Knitting 101, 102, and 103 courses or demonstrating equivalent experience before enrolling. You should also have experience working with DK-weight or smaller yarn on at least one previous project.

The group nature of this workshop means the following foundational skills will not be covered during instruction:

  • Casting on
  • Binding off
  • Knitting in the round
  • Ribbing (knitting and purling)
  • Working with smaller needles and yarn

Experience with decreasing (K2 together and SSK) and Kitchener stitch is helpful, though not required. The instructor will demonstrate the Kitchener stitch during class, but you will likely complete this final step independently after the workshop concludes. If you need a refresher on any skills, consider taking Knitting 102 courses (Striped Summer Top, Bow Headband, or Market Bag) or Knitting 103 courses (Stranded Colorwork or Fixing Mistakes) to build your skills before enrolling.

Materials and Tools Required:

  • Shorty Sock Pattern: Purchase the PDF here. Bring a printed copy to class or have the pattern accessible on a device you can mark up. We will be following the Basic B version.
  • One to three skeins of sock yarn (depending on whether you want stripes and/or a contrasting heel/toe)
  • 40-inch circular knitting needles in Size 0 or 1. Chiaogoo Red Lace Stainless Steel needles are strongly recommended. You will receive instructions on choosing needle size after registering.
  • Small stitch markers
  • Small tapestry needle
  • If choosing to knit two socks simultaneously, you will also need Size 1 double pointed knitting needles
  • Optional but recommended for finishing after class: sock blockers and gentle detergent or specialty wash

Yarn and needles will be available for purchase at our shop in advance and on the day of class at a 10 percent discount.

Refund Policy

We do not issue refunds on workshop registrations.

  • If you register for a workshop and later become unable to attend, we will gladly offer a credit if you notify us at least 5 business days before the workshop.
  • Workshop credits are not redeemable for cash and cannot be applied to merchandise purchases
  • We are unable to offer credits of any kind, or honor reschedule requests, with less than 5 business days advance notice.
  • Credits cannot be given for any registrations for workshops hosted by visiting/ out of town instructors. Due to the nature of these one-time-only workshops, all events hosted by special guests are subject to this policy. Thank you for understanding!
  • In the event a class is cancelled or rescheduled due to inclement weather, or other Act of God, you will receive a credit to take another class at a later date (in-person or virtual).

Our workshops require a great deal of pre-planning, including ordering supplies and tools, booking staff, and making commitments to pay our instructors -- all based on the number of students who register. When students ask to cancel or reschedule at the last minute, we lose money. As a small business, we are unable to absorb these costs and still keep our class prices low.

In fairness to all of our customers, we are unable to make exceptions to our policy, including for reasons of illness or travel. If you are unable to attend a workshop at the last minute, we suggest giving your spot to a friend!

Refund Processing Fees:

  • The following only applies in the event a provider’s cancellation/refund policy allows for cancellations and a full refund, please see above or contact CourseHorse to determine eligibility.
  • In the event a class is still going to occur and a full refund is requested, and you are eligible for a full refund in accordance with the provider’s policy, a 5% processing fee will be deducted from your refund amount.
